Tri-Valley summers are no joke. It's regularly in the 90s in Livermore and Dublin, and even San Ramon and Danville bake by mid-afternoon. That heat, plus dry air and a lot of dust, is tough on cars. So how often should you actually get yours detailed?
The short answer
For most daily drivers in the Tri-Valley:
- Exterior detail: every 4 to 6 weeks
- Interior detail: every 2 to 3 months
- Full detail: 2 to 4 times a year
- Paint protection: sealant every few months, or a ceramic coating once every few years
If you park outside, have kids or dogs, or commute on 580 or 680 every day, lean toward the shorter end.
Why the heat matters
Bird drops and bugs etch faster. On a hot day, a bird dropping can start eating into clear coat within hours. The sooner it comes off, the less damage it does. Regular washes, plus a slick sealant layer, make that a quick wipe instead of a permanent mark.
Dashboards and leather dry out. UV coming through the windshield fades dashboards and cracks leather over time. A good interior detail includes UV protection on plastics and conditioner on leather, which slows all of that down.
Dust is abrasive. The fine dust from dry hills, construction and vineyard roads acts like sandpaper if you wipe it dry. Proper washing, with a foam pre-soak and a clean mitt, lifts it off without scratching.
Signs you're overdue
- Water no longer beads on your paint
- Your paint feels rough when you run a hand over it (inside a plastic bag, you'll really feel it)
- The inside of the windshield looks hazy when the sun hits it
- The car smells like old food, dog or gym bag
