Mobile detailing vs. the car wash: what's the difference?

A tunnel wash takes ten minutes. A detail takes hours. Here's what you actually get with each, and when it's worth it.

There's a car wash on just about every corner in the East Bay. So why do people pay more to have a detailer come to them? It comes down to what's touching your paint, how much gets cleaned, and what your time is worth.

What a tunnel wash does

Automatic washes are fast and cheap. But the spinning brushes and cloth strips touch hundreds of cars a day, and they pick up grit from every one. Over time, that's what leaves the swirl marks you see on dark paint in the sun. Touchless washes avoid the brushes but use harsh chemicals to make up for it, and they rarely get the car fully clean.

Inside, you usually get a quick vacuum and a wipe of the dash. That's about it.

What a detail does

A detail is slow on purpose:

  • Foam pre-soak to loosen grit before anything touches the paint
  • Two-bucket hand wash with clean mitts, so dirt doesn't get dragged around
  • Wheels and tires cleaned with dedicated brushes
  • Clay bar to pull out bonded contamination
  • Sealant for protection that lasts more than a day

Inside, every surface gets attention: seats, carpets, vents, cupholders, door jambs, and glass that's actually streak-free.

Why mobile?

Because you don't have to go anywhere. We come to your driveway, garage or office lot in San Ramon, Pleasanton, Walnut Creek or wherever you are. You keep working, keep hanging out with your family, and your car gets done.

When a car wash is fine

Honestly? A quick touchless wash between details is fine if it keeps road salt or bird drops off. Just skip the brushes on any car you care about.
